African American Outreach & Communications

For years, T&T PR has collaborated with agency partners to develop forward-looking communications and advertising campaigns on behalf of the California Community Colleges to increase enrollment of Black and African American students in its 116 colleges. We’ve supported the campaign with research-based, innovative strategies for the system’s “I Can Afford College”, Career Education, Associate Degree for Transfer, and NextUp campaigns. This included the establishment of a Black and African American Advisory Panel and hundreds of community and faith-based partnerships across the state. We’ve implemented statewide listening tours, town halls and college fairs, followed up by execution of Panel recommendations.

Publicity and Community Engagement

Central to the California Conservation Corps’ (CCC) mission of protecting and enhancing California’s natural resources are its Corpsmembers who work while learning life and job skills. To increase public awareness and attract new Corpsmembers, T&T PR executed a comprehensive communications, outreach and paid media campaign. We’ve increased the CCC’s visibility through stakeholder and influencer outreach and community partnerships. We have been successful in enhancing public perception of the CCC among targeted audiences in key geographic markets. One of many campaign highlights was a social media challenge, “Who Does That?” featuring actress/comedian Tiffany Haddish, who served as CCC’s celebrity spokesperson.

HDR / LA Metro

HDR / LA METRO

SBE/DVBE Outreach and Mentor-Protégé Program

T&T PR works with HDR on LA Metro’s I-605/SR 60 Interchange Improvement Project, managing HDR’s Contracting Outreach and Mentoring Program (COMP) to meet Metro’s SBE/DVBE participation goal and help identify qualified firms. T&T coordinates program activities with the LA Metro Diversity & Economic Opportunity Department (DEOD) contract compliance manager and manages all required elements of the COMP, including overseeing the development and implementation of HDR’s Mentor-Protégé Program; securing and managing HDR’s participation in Metro’s Small Business Enterprise (SBE)/Disabled Veteran Enterprise (DVBE) outreach events; tracking progress to meet LA Metro’s SBE/DVBE participation goal; and conducting business development workshops for all small business subconsultants.

Minority-owned Small Business Outreach

When LA Metro launched its Small Business Set-Aside Program, it aimed to level the playing field for Small Business Enterprises/Disadvantaged Businesses Enterprises (SBE/DBEs). Metro set out to build strong connections between its corporate community and small businesses. To kick things off, T&T PR developed an outreach plan to engage and educate both entities, and increase the number of small businesses that participate in Metro’s procurement process. Highlights of the outreach included the launch of a new signature event, “Meet the Program Managers;” creation of an online “Metro Connect” Small Business Toolkit; and development of opportunities to feature Minority Small Business Success Stories.

Public Safety Education Initiative

Glendale implemented a Safety Education Initiative to empower individuals to adopt safe behaviors while walking, driving and biking. T&T led the grant-funded initiative, developing a public education and behavior-change campaign. After conducting extensive research, including a multilingual Pedestrian Safety Community Survey, T&T launched the “Be Street Smart Glendale – walk smart | drive smart | bike smart” campaign, including crosswalk events, a Billion Step Challenge, in-language collateral materials and multilingual advertising resulting in more than 4 million impressions. The campaign won the 2018 PRISM Award in the Public Service/Government category from the LA Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

Media Outreach & Partnership Engagement

The DMV needed to raise awareness about the REAL ID, a federal identification that complies with new rules for boarding flights within the U.S. and entering secure federal facilities. With the rules set to go into effect October 2020, T&T PR and partner agencies implemented a statewide media and outreach campaign. However, when COVID-19 caused shutdowns, the DMV’s focus pivoted to addressing office closures, social distancing guidelines, online services and DMV announcements. The message became “Stay Home, Stay Safe” with an emphasis on a digital marketing campaign. T&T PR activated its expertise in African American and Latino media and outreach to spread the word.

First 5 California

Advocacy & Stakeholder Engagement

First 5 California wanted to raise awareness about the child care system crisis. First 5 joined forces with partners across the state and called upon legislators to provide critically needed financial support to stabilize and strengthen the early child care and education system. T&T PR supported the effort by developing and implementing African American and Hispanic communications and stakeholder outreach. We secured a cadre of subject-matter experts, organized a town hall on Facebook Live, provided executive media training, prepared message points and social media content, developed a media kit, and managed productions of a highlight video from the town hall.

2020 Redistricting Commission Selection Process

Because of the long-term impact the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s work of setting new congressional and state legislative boundaries has on communities and citizens, it was imperative that the 2020 Commission represent California’s diversity. T&T PR supported a statewide awareness campaign with a focus on African American outreach. The opportunity only comes every 10 years, so T&T had to develop highly targeted communications strategies that not only conveyed the importance of the Commission, but also inspired African Americans to apply. We secured ethnic media placements, organized press events, and arranged presentations for the State Auditor’s Office with key stakeholders.
